the chairman of France, Emmanuel Macron; the chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz; and the prime minister of Italy, Mario Draghi, arrived this Thursday in the Ukrainian capital Kiev, on a trip to tackle the war with Russia and where they are scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President, Volodimir Zelensky.
“German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi say good morning to us on our diplomatic train,” Ukraine’s state rail transport agency Ukrzaliznytsia said. “It would be nice if the three European leaders also agree to support the proper handling of Ukraine’s application for candidate status to the European Union,” the company added in a short message on its Telegram account.
According to information gathered by the Italian news agency AdnKronos, the three European leaders took about ten hours to complete the route between the Polish city of Medyka and Kiev, a route in which they also held an informal summit for about two hours.
The trip of Macron, Scholz and Draghi was not previously announced for security reasons. The three are expected to be received by Zelensky, after which they will hold a joint press conference. Draghi, for his part, plans to visit the city of Irpin, on the outskirts of Kiev, without it being clear for the time being whether he will be joined by Macron and Scholz.
The visit, a day before the European Commission’s decision on Ukraine’s status as a candidate for EU accession, marks the first visit by the leaders of these three countries to Ukraine since the start of the war, which broke out on 24 February in commissioned by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
