In Australia, a young humpback whale got lost in Sydney Harbour and became entangled in ropes and buoys, but was not released until 10pm on Friday.
Rescuers approached the large marine mammal in an inflatable boat and held it down with special equipment so they could cut the ropes.
The rescue was successful late Friday morning: the whale was released and swam back into the open sea.
Whale expert Jessica Fox from the Australian Whale Rescue and Research Organisation said the efforts to save the whale had been “incredible”.
It is not uncommon for whales to enter the waters of Sydney Heads at the harbour entrance. “But it is extremely rare for a whale to become entangled in Sydney Harbour.”
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) no longer classifies humpback whales as endangered. Australia has also removed the large marine mammals from its list of endangered species.
