The country must moderate and facilitate agreements and guarantee the continuity of ongoing files. This appointment has caused concern and discomfort in Brussels, due to the Prime Minister’s undemocratic attitude.
Hungary This Monday, July 1st, taken over from the hands of Belgium of the current presidency of the Council of the European Uniona task that will force the government Victor Orban to practice “honest mediator“between the Member States for one semester.
The ultra-conservative government is taking over the European agenda with the promise of being an “honest” interlocutor, with the desire to “sincere cooperation” with the rest of the Member States and institutions in the interest of “peace, security and prosperity of a truly strong Europe”, as stated in the Semester programme.
The ‘roadmap’ for the Hungarian Presidency will focus on the issues of expansion, defense and competitivenesswith the challenge ‘Make Europe great again’, as evoked by the motto that Budapest has chosen to frame this period.
In turbulent times due to the Russian war against Ukraine or the rise of the far right and populism, the fact that the current presidency is in the hands of a leader who is in complete harmony with the former American president and candidate Donald Trump and close proximity to the Kremlin causes concern and discomfort in Brussels.
Moreover, we should not forget that Hungary has been under the procedure of Article 7 of the EU Treaty for several years because of its undemocratic reforms and the systemic risk they pose to the rule of law across the bloc, a mechanism that, albeit very slowly, is advancing against Budapest , this can lead to the suspension of voting rights in decision-making at the age of 27.
The European Parliament even warned in a resolution of the risks if Orbán were to assume the rotating presidency and asked for measures to be taken to stop him, but this call had no consequences.
