Shortly after the terrorist organization Islamic State claimed responsibility online for the horrific attack in Solingen, the German police special operations team stormed an asylum seekers’ center. An arrest was to be made.
Three people were killed when a man stabbed partygoers during the ‘Festival of Diversity’ on Friday night. Police went on the hunt for the perpetrator with a large contingent. On Saturday night, special forces were deployed in an asylum shelter.
Arrest in refugee home
According to “Bild”, a Syrian was arrested after a search dog was deployed. It is currently unclear what the man has to do with the attack. IS had previously claimed responsibility for the attack on its own news channel. Accordingly, the perpetrator was a “soldier of the Islamic State” who “took revenge on the Muslims in Palestine”.
German media had previously reported, based on witness statements, that the perpetrator had shouted “Allahu Akbar” (German: “God is great”). One injured person even stated that they “knew the unknown suspect from Solingen” and that he was also a visitor to a local mosque, “Welt” reported, citing a police report. There was no official confirmation of this; the executive branch remained in the background on Saturday “for reasons of investigation”.
Two men and a woman killed
According to the police, the dead were two men aged 67 and 56 and a 56-year-old woman. Eight people were injured, four of whom were still in critical condition on Saturday.
Worship in pedestrian area
On Saturday evening, a service was held in Solingen’s pedestrian zone, attended by hundreds of people mourning the victims of the knife attack in the German city. Many came with flowers and candles. Michael Mohr, Solingen’s city dean, said: “The city is different today than it was yesterday.”
