Mudslides, floods and power outages: a heavy thunderstorm swept across East Tyrol on Sunday evening. Blockades forced the closure of the Virgentalstrasse between Virgen and Prägraten, among other roads. Several houses were also evacuated.
“After several mudslides and occasional blockades on Sunday evening in Prägraten in East Tyrol, the L24 Virgentalstrasse from the municipal border between Virgen and Prägraten and other accompanying roads and paths will remain closed until Monday morning,” the state of Tyrol said.
Emergency shelter for those affected
For safety reasons, several homes also had to be evacuated after water entered. “Emergency shelters have been organized for the affected people,” the state said in a statement.
State Geology Wanted
The volunteer fire department was on duty at night and started the clean-up work. “The community has requested state geology for Sunday morning,” the state emphasizes. A situation meeting must then take place in which a decision is made on whether to open the highway or how to proceed.
