In the Swiss canton of St. Gallen, not far from the border with Vorarlberg, a terrible traffic accident occurred on Tuesday evening. A station wagon driven by a woman from Styria left the road and crashed into a group of trees. An 84-year-old woman from Carinthia died at the scene of the accident, the 56-year-old driver fled the scene.
The 56-year-old woman from Styria was driving her station wagon in the municipality of Grabserberg on the Voralp-Bergstrasse from Gamperfin towards Voralp at around 20:50. Her 63-year-old passenger and a 54-year-old and an 84-year-old passenger were in the car with her.
Collided head-on with a tree
For reasons that are still unclear, her car veered off the side of the road in a left turn and crashed head-on into a tree. While the 63-year-old man sustained life-threatening injuries as a result of the accident and the 54-year-old woman in the back seat sustained injuries of unknown nature, the 84-year-old Carinthian woman died at the scene of the accident. The two injured were taken by helicopter to surrounding hospitals for further care.
Escaped on foot
The driver, who also suffered unknown injuries in the accident, fled on foot. Thanks to an immediate search involving both drones and sniffer dogs, the 56-year-old Styrian woman was found injured nearby and arrested about two hours later. She too had to be taken to a hospital.
The woman was declared unfit to drive by the police, a blood and urine sample was ordered and her driving licence for Switzerland was revoked. The woman will be reported to the public prosecutor in the canton of St.Gallen.
