Trial in Innsbruck – Window smashed by police station in madness

Date:

Because he smashed the window of a police station in Innsbruck while angry, among other things, a mentally ill man (41) had to sit in the dock at the regional court in Innsbruck. But he could hardly remember anything.

The 41-year-old Afghan panicked in Innsbruck on two days – in September 2023 and January 2024. First he overturned motorcycles at the central station, then smashed the window of a police station with a rock.

In both cases, he subsequently got into violent physical altercations with police officers, including kicking and punching.

Hardly any memories of the two acts
When asked by Judge Paul Menardi, the man could not remember the September crime; for the second crime, he only remembered breaking the window. “I did it because I needed help,” the man argued to the jury. He had previously ‘heard voices’ and was ‘scared’ by them.

Mental health has “greatly improved”
“The man suffers from a form of epilepsy and as a result of that from a delusional disorder,” an expert emphasized. The voices he hears are enormous and sometimes call on him to “commit suicide.” However, this condition had “greatly improved” in the psychiatric ward, the man’s lawyer emphasized, “my client is currently well adjusted.”

Strict conditions for probationary periods
The court has also taken note of this. The man will not be placed in such a centre for a probationary period of five years. However, under strict conditions: he must continue to undergo extensive psychotherapy, take his medication without fail, have his blood values checked regularly and prove that he abstains from alcohol and cocaine.
