Swedish activist Greta Thunberg was arrested during a pro-Palestinian protest in Copenhagen. Photos from the newspapers “politiken” and “ekstra bladet” and a video from the organizers of the action on Instagram showed the 21-year-old being led away by police officers in front of a university building.
She wore a Palestinian scarf around her neck. “You are not alone!” fellow activists repeatedly shouted at her.
Copenhagen police reported the arrest of six protesters, without confirming or denying whether Thunberg was among them. The detainees are accused of trespassing, the police wrote on the online platform X.
Video shows arrest
Thunberg herself shared videos of the protest in front of an administrative building at the University of Copenhagen (KU) on her Instagram story. They protested because the university had not responded to demands for, among other things, an institutional academic boycott, she wrote. By this she meant that the KU should stop all cooperation with Israeli universities because of the Gaza war.
The university has been asked to do this for some time by the group Studerende mod Besættelsen (Students Against the Occupation), which organised the protest. The university’s administrative and museum buildings are located in the centre of Copenhagen, in the immediate vicinity of the city’s Great Synagogue.
Thunberg has gone astray
Greta Thunberg became world famous for her ‘school strike for the climate’. The international climate movement Fridays for Future emerged from their once so lonely protest action. Since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023, the Swede has repeatedly used her reach on social networks to draw attention to the devastating situation of the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip.
Thunberg has been arrested several times during demonstrations in different countries, especially during climate protests. In May, she was taken away by police on the sidelines of the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, southern Sweden, during a demonstration against Israel’s participation.
