Rotten fruit – Fruits and vegetables in supermarkets often spoil

Date:

Consumer advocates checked the assortment of fresh fruit and vegetables on the shelves of local supermarkets. The result is sobering: spoiled products were discovered at every market.

Testers from the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labour found four defective items at Norma, three at Lidl and two each at Winkler Markt, Uni Markt, Penny Markt, Hofer and Maxi Markt. Billa and Eurospar each had one affected product.

Given the current high prices, it is particularly annoying for consumers if, shortly after purchase, it turns out that fruit or vegetables are already spoiled online or in the packaging. Anyone who pays full price should expect impeccable goods.

Better quality assurance needed
The food trade should give its employees more time to check and sort products. Perishable goods should be offered at reduced prices in a timely manner, because food is too valuable to be thrown away, according to the AK.

  • Soft fruits tend to develop mold quickly: strawberries, blueberries, blackberries or raspberries should be carefully checked before purchase and transported properly.
  • If only one berry is moldy, the berries immediately adjacent to it should also be removed. If several berries are already affected by mold, the entire package should be thrown away.
  • Other watery fruits and vegetables, such as cucumbers, tomatoes, peaches, or nectarines, should also be discarded whole if they appear to be moldy.
  • Freezing or cooking vegetables or fruits does not help against mold toxins, because they tolerate both heat and cold.
  • Processing rotten or moldy fruit into compote or jam is not a solution.

Right to exchange the goods
If you discover that you have bought spoiled vegetables or fruit, complain about the product as soon as possible by showing your receipt. You have the right to exchange the goods.
