The 43-year-old from Eferding was one of the fastest mountain racers in Europe in recent years. At the mountain race in Landshaag – the course was only a few kilometers away from his home – he remained undefeated from 2015 to 2018. The crowd favorite celebrated his greatest sporting success in 2018 by winning the title in the European Mountain Championship in the Superbike class.
Resigned earlier this year
Early this year – shortly after his 43rd birthday – he surprisingly announced his retirement. He wanted to concentrate more on kickboxing and convertible driving. But life threw a spanner in the works for the Eferdinger. In the course of his great passion, he lost his life on Sunday evening.
Crashed into a guardrail
He and his old mechanic Michael Reiter (37) were traveling on an Aprilia SR 125 along the B 132 towards Feldkirchen. In the municipality of Bad Mühllacken, Gammer lost control of the scooter at the end of a long bend, fell, continued to slide across the road and hit a guardrail.
Reiter was also thrown against the guardrail. Although the two men were wearing helmets, all attempts at help came too late.
The sadness for both of them is enormous. “Unbelievable, I wish you a good journey and let it be torn apart there, up there you will find your route”, it says on social media. Or: “Mochs gurd Woifi. Thank you for the many beautiful encounters and especially the conversations I was able to have with you. It was not only partying and racing that was your strongest point… You were much, much more.’
