The Rioja Alavesa Winery Association will present soon a new project that aims to unite the largest number of family wineries from the Rioja Alavesa, regardless of the designation of origin to which their wines belong, in order to embark on “a new path towards the prosperity of the sector”.
In a manifesto they read in Laguardia, the members of ABRA warned the “serious crisis” facing the sector Alava wine industry in recent years. The region has gone from 358 wineries in 2015 to 262 wineries in 2023. They too have reported a 7.7% decrease in the number of wine growers.
They cited the following reasons for reaching this situation: the lack of opportunities for the youth and reducing margins of profitability, caused by the drop in grape prices (which have increased from €1.19 in 2027 to €0.71 in 2022).
According to him, the large scale production that the Regulatory Council of the Rioja Denomination of Origin allows has contributed to this crisis which affects small producers and has ‘homogenised’ products.
However, the new project does not propose to introduce a new designation of originThe president of ABRA, Itxaso Compañón, explained before the EITB microphones that the petition for the denomination of Arabako Mahastiak will continue its course “because some wineries are interested”, but that this new path seeks to unite all small winegrowers, regardless of the denomination with which they work.
What ABRA will be looking for in its new strategy will be distinguish the wines of Álavaeven within the La Rioja appellation, “to protect its identity and uniqueness” and will ensure that its wines are related to authenticity, quality and excellence.
Itxaso Compañón has stated that they will provide the details of the new project next week.
