Strong gusts of wind are blowing across parts of Carinthia. This is safeguarding the fire brigade’s work.
In the mountains of Carinthia, it is already deep into winter. The cold front of the past few days brought not only rain but also snow. According to the State Alarm and Warning Center (Lawz), no major storm operations have taken place so far. Only strong gusts of wind keep the fire brigades on their toes. Just like on Saturday morning, the sirens were wailing in the Liesertal. Trees fell between Rennweg and Krems. Especially in the Spittal district, the emergency services had to be deployed more at night. Otherwise it is quiet.
Rescue in the mountains is also necessary
Two 18-year-olds were caught in the middle of bad weather and went on a multi-day hike in the Ankogel group area in Mallnitz on September 9.
The tour took place over several daily stages from Mallnitz towards Malta. Due to the predicted start of winter on 12 September, the two had to break off their tour and spend the night in a self-catering hut. Despite the bad weather with fresh snow and strong storm winds, the couple attempted to descend from the self-catering hut towards Mallnitz on Friday.
Avalanches and emergency calls
Avalanches broke out on the steep mountain slopes and the hikers lost their orientation. However, they managed to return to the self-catering hut. Due to the steep terrain, an alternative route was not possible and the holidaymakers called the emergency number on their mobile phones. Emergency services rescued the two slightly hypothermic hikers under difficult weather conditions.
