Where do the middle-spotted woodpeckers, tree frogs and garlic toads actually live around the Mauthausen Danube Bridge? Citizens’ initiatives are taking action at the Vienna Federal Administrative Court against the positive environmental impact assessment of the planned new Danube Bridge.
The environmental impact assessment for the new Danube Bridge in Mauthausen, which is often crucial for construction projects, has already been approved. However, complaints were filed against the decisions that could delay the project, as the states of Upper and Lower Austria announced in a joint statement.
One and a half year delay
The complainants want a new mapping of animal species such as the middle spotted woodpecker, the tree frog and the pit toad. If the court were to grant the request, the construction of the new bridge would be delayed by about a year and a half, according to the affected states.
Structural exchange is also possible
The joint statement said they were preparing for “all eventualities”, including replacing the old bridge’s supporting structure.
The existing Danube Bridge is dilapidated and can only be used thanks to renovations and measures such as a speed limit of 30. Politicians had already announced a new Danube crossing in 2015.
