There is great excitement in Italy because it is currently not possible to send traffic fines to Austrian traffic offenders. But there should be no joy in this country. Every year the Republic loses hundreds of thousands of euros in fines from foreign speed offenders. There are two reasons for the legal oddity: one actually benefits other states.
On average, more than five million traffic violations are registered in Austria every year, about a third of which are committed by foreign drivers. Unfortunately, the prosecution of these traffic offenders with foreign license plates was and is not very fruitful. With the European data comparison systems EUCARIS and CBE, there are now options to locate license plate holders across borders. But that’s not nearly enough to actually get all the money.
