Florida braces itself – “We can only pray”: Styria braves hurricane

Date:

Save yourself if you can! US President Joe Biden urged everyone in large parts of Florida to seek safety. There are also numerous Austrians in the area.

The experts agreed: Hurricane “Milton” will make landfall south of Tampa this morning with top speeds between 125 mph and 155 mph.

A second highest category is expected
“Milton is currently still in the Gulf of Mexico, about 500 kilometers away, moving at a speed of 20 km/h,” Ubimet weather expert Konstantin Brandes said in an interview with “Krone” on Wednesday. And further: “It currently appears that the second highest Category 4 storm will pass through Florida.”

The Styrian resident remains at home despite the warning
Hundreds of Austrians currently live and holiday in the region. One of these is the Styrian Thomas List from Fort Myers. He told the “Krone” shortly before the worst of the storm broke out: “We have prepared everything, are in zone A and actually have to leave our house. But we will persevere at home and hope that the same thing will not happen that happened three years ago, when Hurricane Ian took everything away from us.”

And further: “Many of my friends have already lost everything because of ‘Helene’. All we can do is stick together and pray that the total apocalypse doesn’t happen again! All I can say is: Florida, stay strong!”

Even more rain than in Lower Austria
However, Brandes expects the worst: “A huge amount of rain is also expected. The forecast is 300 liters per square meter per day.” So even more than the terrible flooding in Lower Austria, where around 200 liters per square meter per day were documented. In addition, storm surges of up to five meters can also be expected along the Florida coast. ‘Milton’ left a first taste on the coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula: 90,000 households without electricity and entire areas of land underwater.

US President Joe Biden also said it could be “the worst storm to hit Florida in more than a century.”

He called on people to immediately seek safety. Most fled in their cars and the airports came to a standstill.
