By all accounts, the death of the popular innkeeper Rudi Hirsch leaves a void in the village life of Groß Gerungs. The inn in the Waldviertel has since closed.
“Our inn is closed due to Rudi’s death!” With this moving message on the homepage, Renate Stadlhofer, the partner who fell into a valley of sadness, says goodbye to her beloved life partner Rudi Hirsch! Together with him, the native Styrian woman took over the inn in Groß Gerungs in the Waldviertel from his parents – and in the truest sense brought café culture at its best into the community.
And with the most climate-friendly refinement! Because the focus was on regional ingredients. With the most valuable items from their own vegetable, fruit and herb garden, the couple managed to spoil their guests – both local and from near and far – with culinary delights.
But three years ago, Rudi received a devastating diagnosis: lung cancer! “He has now lost this battle,” said Renate Stadlhofer, a top chef who has been showered with numerous European and domestic awards, in a voice choked with tears.
Support for the future
What remains are the memories of so many guests of beautiful evenings in the special restaurant. “She doesn’t know what to do now,” says country house hostess Itha Walser-Lazarini in the nearby Langschlägerwald. She is one of many guardian angels who now fly to the widow, including state boss Johanna Mikl-Leitner and ÖVP club boss Jochen Danninger: “We are ready for any good work and want Renate to be able to continue running the inn!” They want help for all five children and also for the concession.
