After a rear-end collision, the Wolfsberg tunnel on the Tauernautobahn had to be closed on Thursday morning. A refrigerated truck lost a lot of meat that had to be collected by the fire brigade.
Shortly after 4 a.m., a truck driver (56) lost control of his truck on the Tauernautobahn in the Spittal an der Drau area and skidded. “He hit several times both the guardrail on the right side and the concrete barrier that ran in the middle of the highway,” the Carinthia State Police Directorate said. The forces broke the vehicle’s trailer, which weighed several tons. Countless pig halves were scattered across the road.
“A following motorist was unable to stop in time and drove into the side of the trailer that was lying on the guardrail,” the police said.
A total of 30 men from the Spittal an der Drau and St. Peter fire brigades had to respond to remove the meat products. During the cleaning work, the Wolfsberg tunnel towards Villach had to be closed to traffic. There was a kilometer-long traffic jam in the early morning traffic.
