In the high mountains, triumph and death are close together. The famous Slovak mountaineer Onderj Huserka tragically experienced this firsthand. After his historic ascent on the eastern flank of Nepal’s Langtang Lirung, the 34-year-old suffered a fatal accident during the descent.
The 34-year-old, who had already climbed peaks in the Alps, the Himalayas and the Pamir Mountains, fell into a crevasse on the 7,234-metre Langtang Lirung, the Slovak Mountaineering Association said on Sunday. After initially calling for a rescue operation for Huserka on Facebook, the association reported on Sunday that a helicopter could not fly to the accident site due to bad weather. Huserka’s family and friends must now “come to terms with the fact that Ondrej is no longer with us.”
His Czech companion confirmed Huserka’s death in a moving Facebook post. During the descent, the Slovak fell about eight meters onto an angular surface and from there slid “in a labyrinth further into the depths of the glacier”.
Comrade stayed with him “until his light went out”
Holecek said he tried for hours to save Huserka. Since he was stuck head down and apparently unable to move, this was not a success. “I went down to him and stayed with him for four hours until his light went out. There is nothing to add,” Holecek concludes his report.
