The situation in Styrian youth football is getting worse. More and more matches have to take place without referees, amateur referees, own coaches or even whistling parents. The “Krone” spoke to youth leaders from Styria about the current state of affairs and asked the association how precarious the situation really is.
This season it lasted six rounds in Köflach. Not until the first victory or the top of the rankings – but until the youth teams from U10 to U15 had a club referee for the first time! “Ten years ago I was a youth leader for the first time, and the situation was bad then too. Nowadays you can really call an occupation in the area a coincidence,” says Robert Winterleitner, who, as a youth official in Köflach, supports the search for referees. Together with Mooskirchen, both clubs regularly hire hobby referees from regular competitions. Anything is better than having to let your own coaches or parents blow the whistle – even if that cannot always be avoided.
