The wonderful autumn weather of the past few days and weeks also has its disadvantages. It’s way too dry! The state of Tyrol now warns of an increased risk of forest fires. Relaxation is probably not in sight until next week. A change in weather should bring at least some rain and snow.
The state and the fire brigade association advise increased caution and point out that there is a high risk of fire in and near forests – especially in the Tyrolean Oberland. The reason for this is the prolonged dry weather, “leading to increased surface dryness, including many dry leaves and grass,” according to a press release.
Cigarettes and barbecues are taboo
Under no circumstances should smoldering objects such as matches or cigarettes be discarded carelessly. Fires – for example for grilling – are also not allowed to be lit in the forest or near the forest. Even a small amount of carelessness can cause a major forest fire with enormous damage!
Forest fires are usually caused by humans, the report said. State fire chief Jakob Unterladstätter also calls for caution: “Open fire should not be used in forests and field areas; at this time, purpose-built fires should be avoided if possible.”
Call the fire brigade immediately
If a forest fire is discovered, do not take action yourself, but inform the fire brigade immediately and ideally wait at a safe distance until the emergency services arrive so that you can instruct them if necessary. “Our firefighters are trained for these types of situations and are ready to respond at any time,” Unterladstätter continued.
The situation could relax somewhat in the coming week. The weather forecast shows some rain and snow at higher altitudes.
