Monkeypox: First vaccinations possible next week

Date:

The number of monkey pox cases in Austria continues to rise. A total of 20 have now been confirmed and a suspicious case is being clarified. The majority was registered in Vienna. Only vaccine doses should be in Austria in the next week.

Most of the evidence of the disease, which has been notifiable for a few weeks, is in Vienna with 14 so far. Two of those affected have already recovered, twelve men are still active cases in the federal capital and officially isolated, three are currently being treated in hospital, according to the office of health councilor Peter Hacker (SPÖ). The infected persons in Vienna are men between the ages of 20 and 50. The three hospitalized patients are treated in the Favoriten clinic.

Symptoms range from very mild cases of isolated pustules to more widespread rashes, according to the Hacker Bureau. The hospital stay is purely a precautionary measure, it was emphasized. The course of the disease itself does not necessarily require hospital treatment. As far as the city has been able to determine so far, none of the people have been vaccinated against smallpox.

Delivery first vaccine doses next week
According to the Ministry of Health, the first vaccine doses against monkeypox could be delivered in Austria as early as next week. However, these are not intended for the general population, the vaccination must be available for individual groups of people. Who exactly is still unclear. This is discussed within the National Immunization Committee.

Anyone who has had close physical contact with a person infected with monkeypox or who suspects smallpox because of symptoms (especially skin lesions and pustules) should call the health hotline 1450. The further steps are explained there.

Most recently, Tyrol reported its first suspected case of monkey pox on Thursday. Linz reported his first lab-confirmed case on Wednesday. Nearly 5,000 cases of monkey pox have been reported worldwide.
