Anyone who has been suffering from complaints such as coughing, sneezing or breathing problems for days in Vienna will probably suffer from the consequences of the current air quality. This is even classified as “extremely poor” on some weather apps. The particulate matter content is increased. You can read what you should pay attention to now at krone.at…
Many Viennese are concerned. Weather apps have already warned about air quality in recent days. This can be classified as moderate to poor and is expected to remain that way for the next few days – at least until Thursday. The main pollutant contributing to current poor levels is particulate matter.
Concentration above WHO limit
There are a total of 17 air quality measuring points in the federal capital. Twelve of them also measure particulate matter (PM 2.5). This value and especially the PM 10 value (coarser particulate matter) are increased. The PM2.5 concentration is actually about 1.6 to 2.6 times higher than the limit recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).
This index can also affect someone else’s health. This can particularly affect sensitive groups of people. Possible symptoms include coughing, difficulty breathing and worsening asthma. Even healthy people can develop symptoms after prolonged exposure.
Increased emissions of pollutants
According to experts, the current measurements are not unusual at this time of year. Air quality in Vienna generally deteriorates from the end of October, with the winter months being hardest hit by air pollution. This is partly due to meteorological reasons, but also to the start of the heating season. As the colder season begins, heating increases, leading to greater emissions of pollutants.
The weather forecasts for the coming days indicate continued poor air quality.
