According to the storm center’s warning, the chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon, starting from the western mountains, will increase rapidly. Severe thunderstorms with heavy rain, hail and showers can then rage on the northern side of the Alps in the late afternoon and evening. In the late evening or overnight, the thunderstorms should finally reach the northeast, affecting the Weinviertel and the northern Vienna Basin. Also in Vienna one should not be spared.
It will also be restless in the northeast on Saturday. Occasional showers and thunderstorms can also occur in the eastern and southern mountains. Saturday will be sunny in the west of Austria.
It stays hot – especially in the east
However, it will remain warm, especially in eastern Austria, according to forecasts for the coming week. And that increases the risk of fire. In forests in particular, they can quickly get out of hand and cause devastating damage – there are already 124 this year.
The risk is especially high in the east due to the predicted heat wave and little rain. Dry soil, dead grass and too little rain act like tinder and a little carelessness is enough to start a wildfire. Felix Montecuccoli, president of Land&Forst Betriebe Austria, therefore called on forest visitors to be careful.
