It sounds like something from another time: the Colosseum in Rome will soon be the scene of gladiator fights again – but this time in peaceful form. On two evenings in May, only a few guests are allowed to enter the almost 2,000-year-old arena, where they can immerse themselves in the world of ancient gladiators.
The Colosseum in Rome will again be the scene of gladiator fights in 2025, albeit of a peaceful nature. The arena, which will soon be two thousand years old, will open after sunset on two evenings in May to just over twenty guests.
Places will be raffled off
The places will be raffled in a lottery via an internet platform. The two- to three-hour program in a historic setting includes demonstrations by recreational gladiators and lessons in combat practices for visitors.
With around seven million tourists a year, the Colosseum is now one of the most visited attractions in Italy. The arena, which once held 70,000 spectators, was built between 72 and 82 AD. The last real gladiator fights took place there in the fifth century. Over time, the complex fell into disrepair, but was gradually renovated.
Booking platform wants to donate money for renovation
The lottery is organized by the booking platform Airbnb, as announced by the Colosseum administration. Applications are possible from November 27 to December 10. In return, the group made 1.5 million euros available for renovation works.
There was still public criticism of the agreement. Airbnb, like other internet platforms, has been accused of making affordable housing scarce by short-term rental of apartments to tourists. The situation is particularly extreme in Rome.
