According to unconfirmed reports, the Ukrainian army attacked a Russian military airport near Kursk with artillery rockets from the US ATACMS system. The attack therefore took place on Monday night.
Kursk-Vostochny airport was hit by at least two missiles with multiple warheads, the report said. It would be the second use of ATACMS missiles on Russian territory since Washington recently allowed Kiev to carry out long-range weapons attacks on military targets in Russia.
Attack not yet confirmed by military personnel
No information was initially available about the extent of the damage. The reports could not be independently verified and neither the Ukrainian nor Russian military initially confirmed the attack.
The first attack with ATACMS last week took place on the headquarters of the Russian armed forces deployed near Bryansk. With around 50,000 soldiers, including 10,000 fighters from North Korea, they want to retake the area near Kursk that has been occupied by Ukraine since the summer.
