An American artist with Chinese roots wanted to make a big appearance on Sunday with a drone and fireworks show in the Chinese province of Fujian. But during the colorful show, hundreds of drones suddenly crashed, hit the ground or fell into the water.
According to Chinese media, a police jam in Quanzhou, where the spectacle took place, was likely responsible for the massive crash. According to reports, one of the backup drones was identified as an “enemy flying object.” A so-called jammer was immediately activated. The drone had apparently not been correctly reported to the authorities in advance.
“Drone rain” spread on social media
The ‘drone rain’ resulted in no injuries, but did cause some panic. Some brave onlookers captured footage of the incident with their mobile phone cameras (see video above). These spread quickly on social media.
Some unmanned aerial vehicles that were brought to the ground were also taken as souvenirs. The artist asked the “collectors” to return all the devices and help in the search.
