Urkullu participated in the inauguration of the new Topo station, which has made it possible to expand the passenger building, improve access conditions and have a second track.

The Lehendakari, Iñigo Urkullu, stated that thanks to the joint work of the Basque Government, the Regional Council of Nueva Aquitania and the Commonwealth of Iparralde, “the intermodal area Hendaia de strategic link of the Atlantic Corridor that traverses the European Union”, and that “we now have a more accessible and spectacular station that prefers cross-border mobility

On Monday, Urkullu, together with the President of the new Regional Council of Aquitaine, Alain Rousset, and that of the Commonwealth of Iparralde, Jean-Réné Etchegaray, took part in the inauguration of the new mole stationat the Hendaye Multimodal Exchange Center.

“The construction of the new Topo station has been a fundamental step in a long-term collaboration between our institutions,” he assured.

In the words of the Lehendakari: “this investment is an important step in the implementation of the objectives to combat the climate crisis”, recalling that “the European basic rail network should be completed by 2030 and the European rail network by 2050 rail network worldwide European”.

Urkullu explained that Euskotren provides a service to more than 700,000 travelers with origin and destination in Hendaye. “At the center of this service is the huge work of Euskal Trenbide Sarea and since June 2020, the cross-border population has benefited from the double track at Hendaia train station,” he recalls.

According to Urkullu, the new station, implemented by the Basque government, has made it possible to expand the passenger building, improve access conditions and have a second track.

In addition, the Lehendakari has assured that the Transfermuga project is underway with the prospect of implementing the third rail line between Donostia and Irun/Hendaia, which “will make it easier for direct trains to connect Baiona and San Sebastián”.

He also recalled the progress of the Basque Y that allows the conventional rail network to reach San Sebastián, Bilbao and Vitoria-Gasteiz. However, Urkullu added that much remains to be done, but that “improving rail infrastructure south of Bordeaux will bring greater benefits than completing the Basque Y and the third rail line to Irun/Hendaia”.
