Safety work following the devastating slope collapse is progressing. A dangerous block of stone was blown away on Friday. The closure of the B33 should be lifted earlier than planned.
On Friday morning, experts placed about 20 kilos of explosives at the demolition site of the landslide that fell on June 3 near Aggsbach-Dorf in the Melk district and buried the B33. The important road connection in the Wachau has since been closed.
The clean-up work continues quickly
The explosive charge attacked a 125 cubic meter boulder hanging precariously above the rubble cone. When the dust cloud had settled, State Transport Council Udo Landbauer was able to announce: “The clean-up work can now progress quickly. We will release the B33 much earlier than originally expected.”
Working hours were extended
At the beginning of the month, all stone nails had already been placed in preparation for networking at the demolition site. “Extending the teams’ working hours to seven days a week has proven to be very effective,” says Landbauer. The blown up rock will be cleared away with an excavator from Monday. This means that all safety measures in the upper part of the piste must be completed before Christmas. The rubble cone is then cleared and the stone chip protection is applied. Landbauer: “We will be able to lift the roadblock before Easter.”
