Sebastian is grateful – readers of “Krone” gave dolphin therapy to boys (10).

Date:

Three examples from last year’s “Krone” “Christmas Joy” fundraising campaign show how the generosity of our readers made it possible to help compatriots plagued by fate. For example, Sebastian (10), who had to undergo a complicated hip operation.

The passionate young footballer Sebastian (10) from the Innviertel (Upper Austria) received a terrible diagnosis in 2022: Perthes disease. His femoral head was no longer supplied with blood and slowly died. The result: severe pain and inability to move. Doctors determined that a quarter of Sebastian’s femoral head was no longer enclosed within the socket.

Sebastian’s hip was reconstructed in August 2022 during a five-hour procedure. “His pelvis was sawn through three times, tilted forward and reattached with hooks,” says his single mother Nicole. The femoral head was secured with plates and screws so that it was fixed again.

Readers made dolphin therapy possible
However, the pain persisted and Sebastian was still dependent on a wheelchair despite numerous therapies. Only dolphin therapy brought him noticeable improvement. The mother could no longer afford another one. Readers of “Krone” stepped into the breach and raised the necessary amount.

Because the metal parts were removed from his hip in April this year, the trip to the dolphin center in Kemer (Türkiye) could only start at the end of August. Sebastian had daily physical contact with the friendly aquatic mammals. “It was a big step forward for his health – the pain was noticeably reduced. “I am extremely grateful to the ‘Krone’ readers,” emphasizes Mama Nicole.

Assistance dog helps Sabine
The former nurse Sabine from the Linz-Land district also received financial help. She suffers from the muscle disease myasthenia, which causes a disturbance in the conduction between nerve and muscle. The result is that things suddenly fall out of her hand or her eyes close. The autoimmune disease rosacea also causes her problems. “I then get a red face that burns and itches terribly.”

But her allergic asthma seems to be the most problematic. “I have an allergic reaction to many substances and then get choking attacks, which can be fatal within ten minutes,” explains Sabine, who no longer has a sense of smell. For this reason, assistance dog “Gustav” is trained to immediately warn her of dangers. Thanks to the donors of “Krone”, the training costs are secured. Sabine: “I am extremely relieved, very happy and very grateful.”

The electric wheelchair is a great relief for Patrick
Thanks to the readers of “Krone”, the seriously disabled Patrick (late Tay-Sachs disease) from Mühlviertel (Upper Austria) was also able to make his heart’s desire come true. He is dependent on a wheelchair and his joints are becoming increasingly stiff.

However, an electric wheelchair specifically tailored to his needs was not affordable for his family. And it was unreasonable of his caregivers to push him up the steep hill to the living area without a motor. The ‘crown’ helped him get an electric wheelchair.
