“Crown” in Ukraine – In the hail of missiles: silent hope for peace

Date:

With a constant hail of missiles, Russia continues to put Ukraine in fear of death: pure psychological terror! At the local inspectorate “Krone”, the desire for an end to the third winter of the war was palpable.

Bursting walls, burning tall buildings and cars, people screaming in despair in the middle of Kiev – one passerby dies, ten seriously injured. Four days before Christmas Eve, a rocket exploded in the Ukrainian capital.

Journalists who accompanied a Caritas mission through Ukraine look at the images on their smartphones in horror. Not so long ago, some people were surprised by the extremely strict security measures, that is, the immediate need to go to a bomb shelter in the event of a rocket alarm.

But now the embarrassed consternation is spreading on the train back to Austria.

A hellish machine explodes in the middle of the city of Kiev
Because the infernal machine exploded only about 1.2 kilometers from our hotel, from which we had checked out twelve hours ago. As we return in warm cars to our safe and neutral homeland, Ukrainians continue to suffer psychological terror: destruction and the fear of Russian missiles and drones spreading like a silent death from the skies.

Since the war of aggression began three years ago, there have been 50,000 air raids! 50,000 times panicking and praying for survival.

Particularly shocking: a surreptitious rain of rockets at a children’s hospital on July 8. “Chaos and tears during the evacuation of the children,” said Daria, a hospital worker.

Despite the war crimes, the resilience of many Ukrainians remains unbroken – even as there are also 40,000 civilian victims to mourn. Striking at the monument for tens of thousands of fallen soldiers on the Maidan. Almost every family has a father, brother or son to mourn.

Pensioners also pray for the end of the war winter
In a care center, women process bread into sustainable field supplies for the soldiers. And an amputee throws candles to light the trenches.

Refugees live in barracks near a bombed settlement in Borodyanka. One of them is the former submarine sailor Igor (72). “Unfortunately, I’m already too old for the army. I would show it to the Russians!”, he says, ready to fight.

In fact, he and his wife are at war against the cold: at minus 20 degrees, survival is impossible without an oven. The retired couple has not yet frozen to death thanks to wood deliveries from Caritas.

Anatoli Alexandrovic (78) also owes his life to the charity helpers. As a disabled person, he has been stuck in his apartment for five years. That is why he, like millions of his fellow countrymen, prays for an end to the winter of war.
