Abandoned and not taken seriously – this is how the tenants of a municipal building in Vienna-Liesing feel due to the numerous damages after and during the construction work. In December, an elderly resident was even injured.
The residential complex on Liesinger Gregorygasse has been renovated and densified for about two years. An innovative project with lots of wood, thermal renovation, new elevators and 44 attic apartments.
For the tenants, however, the situation feels more like a ‘failed construction’. “When they installed the heat-resistant wall, they simply drilled through the wall of the room,” says Brigitta N.
There is also water damage because the roof was not removed gradually, but completely. “No one cared about construction for 55 years. And now they are destroying everything,” says an angry tenant, whose water damage from May was only painted over in December. A woman has been waiting since October for someone to come and inspect the damage.
The biggest problem, however, is that there is no contact person or independent expert for the damage caused. The information point set up offers little solace.
Autumn before Christmas Eve
Shortly before Christmas, another accident occurred when 86-year-old Elfriede N. fell over a dowel on the sidewalk, which was simply forgotten after the scaffolding was removed. Surgery included.
Wiener Wohnen confirms the incident and emphasizes: “We demanded a full explanation from the construction company. They are also responsible for cleaning the sidewalks during the work.” The spokeswoman also assures that work is being done at full speed to repair the damage.
Consequences for construction supervision
Viennese FPÖ leader Dominik Nepp is demanding that such large-scale renovations not be carried out during ongoing housing operations and demanding consequences for misconduct in construction supervision.
