During lecture – hammer attack on university in Tokyo: eight injured

Date:

A student attacked people with a hammer at a Tokyo university on Friday, injuring at least eight of them. As Japanese media reported, citing investigators, the attacker was arrested on the spot.

The perpetrator is therefore a 22-year-old woman. All victims were conscious, broadcaster NHK reported. The attack reportedly took place on a campus of Hosei University in western Tokyo.

Victim hit during lecture
It is said that the sociology student beat her victims during a lecture and injured several people in the head. A motive for the crime could therefore be pent-up anger: the young woman felt ignored.

Multiple attacks in the past
Violent crime is relatively rare in Japan and its gun laws are among the strictest in the world. Recently, however, several knife and gun attacks have shocked the country, including the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzō Abe in July 2022 during an election campaign.

In January 2022, a knife attacker stabbed three people in front of the University of Tokyo. An 18-year-old boy, a 17-year-old girl and a 72-year-old man were injured.

That morning the university entrance exams had taken place. According to police, the 17-year-old attacker had failed the exams and wanted to die because he “wasn’t doing well” at school.

Last December, a man stabbed two students at a McDonald’s in Kitakyushu, southwestern Japan. One boy was killed and the other seriously injured.
