The President of the European Commission underlines at the World Economic Forum the importance of transatlantic cooperation and decarbonisation as key priorities for the EU.
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyenhas emphasized the need to “work together” in the global economic order to avoid a “global race” and has warned that “it is in no one’s interest to sever ties.”
Von der Leyen, who is participating today at the World Economic Forum in Davos, explained that the world order that we envisioned 25 years ago on a collaborative basis “has not become a reality” and instead “we are a a new era of tough competition geostrategic”.
In a context where “the most important world economies compete for access to raw materials, new technologies and global trade routes”, has advocated “working together to avoid a global race to the bottom. Because it is in no one’s interest to break the bonds of the global economy.”
“Instead,” von der Leyen added, “we must modernize the rules to preserve our ability to create mutual benefits for our citizens.”
He has warned that as competition increases, “we are likely to continue to see extensive use of economic tools such as sanctions, export controls and tariffs.”
But he believes it is “important” that “we balance the need to ensure our security with our opportunity to innovate and improve our prosperity.”
On the other hand, Von der Leyen has defended the defense Paris Agreement as “the greatest hope for humanity” and reaffirmed that Europe will continue to lead the fight against climate change, even after the United States’ decision to withdraw from the pact.
The President has emphasized that the clean energy transition is essential to ensure energy independence and improve competitiveness, focusing on renewable and nuclear sources and next-generation technologies such as fusion and solid-state batteries.
Finally, he announced that Brussels will present a plan in February to… clean industrymodernize electrical infrastructure and keep Europe in the race for disruptive technologies, consolidating its role as a global leader in sustainability and international cooperation.
