Swiss researchers want to follow the animals in the wild with an intelligent microphone. The microphone automatically records animal sounds over large areas and analyzes them using artificial intelligence (AI).
This microphone makes it possible to identify types, to register changes in ecosystems and to make data-based decisions about environmental and nature conservation issues, said Federal University in Lausanne (EPFL) on Friday.
The background noise of the microphones filters. Then algorithms recognize the sounds of certain animal species. This information is displayed in an app. The microphone was first tested on wolves in the canton of Glarus.
Tests were promising
In 2022, the researchers conducted a number of tests that the EPFL has shown to be useful to know where the animals are. The microphone system has not been able to recognize individual animals on the basis of their calls, but it could distinguish the calls of adults and young animals, the university said.
The technology now also applies to various other animal species. In addition to wolves, the microphone is also able to recognize birds and amphibians and to control their populations. In the future it should even be possible to observe different types of animals in different habitats at the same time. The microphone was developed by the Epffart-Up Synatur.
