Blackmailing a main source of income
The Cosa Nostra is native to Sicily and consists of some families. The number of their members is currently estimated at around 5000. The extortion of protection funds is still one of their most important sources of income, but more and more entrepreneurs are now defending themselves against the criminal organization.

Sicily is generally considered the original region of the Italian Mafia, which, in addition to the Cosa Nostra, has three other large organizations: the ‘Ndrangheta in Calabria, the Camorra in Naples and Campania and the Sacra Corona Unita in Puglia.

The Cosa Nostra was founded in the first half of the 19th century. It works worldwide and is related to many other criminal groups.
