Shots were fired Monday during a US National Day parade in an affluent Chicago suburb. Five people were said to have died and sixteen others were injured. The police initially did not confirm this.
The crime took place in Highland Park, a suburb of Chicago. Then chaos broke out and crowds fled, Fox News and NBC report. The Chicago Sunday Times and NBC broadcaster report five dead and 16 injured.
It was not immediately known who fired the shots during the parade in Highland Park. According to the Chicago Sunday Times, eyewitnesses saw people bleeding on the floor and another person lying under a blanket. Police officers with guns are on the parade ground. A dog brigade was asked to search for a suspect.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office called on Twitter to avoid the Highland Park area.
The shots were said to have been fired about ten minutes after the parade started.
