In Switzerland, potential predecessors will have to complete a psychological competence test from next week. The bishops responded to an abuse study by the University of Zurich. At least 921 victims of sexual abuse in the church environment were determined.
According to the decree, the psychological suitability takes place in four steps: after the psychological test there is a competence-oriented conversation with qualified and experienced experts and a “forensic-clinical conversation for the identification of possible risk factors for pastoral service”. Finally, there is also a conversation with the head of the seminar or with a representative of the local bishop.
The procedure must not only complete potential pastors, but also Roman Catholic priesthood candidates. People with foreign citizenship go through the same clarification procedure. The result cannot be obtained.
What is being considered
According to the decree, attention is paid to basic competencies, the psychological constitution, a balance of character and affective adulthood. The Roman Catholic Church jointly developed the new selection system on a forensic psychologist. The goal is to check whether someone has the necessary personal and intellectual qualifications for working in pastoral care. Risk factors must be discovered. NUSES in sexual development and in creating relationships are also analyzed.
The decree was issued on March 11. Psychological clarification should still take place during training.
