Will new telescopes deliver sufficient information soon?

Date:

Swiss researchers prepare for a systematic search for alien forms of life. New telescopes are currently being developed for this purpose, which are intended to make this company possible.

In preparation, an investigation has calculated how many planets should focus on future research projects to offer reliable results. “Currently, telescopes are being developed for the first time that have been designed to systematically look for life on other planets,” said study author Daniel Agerhausen of the Federal Technical University of Technology Zurich (ETH).

“Find nothing” can also be an important result
But what if the telescopes don’t find signs of life? Before the telescopes are ready in ten to 20 years, the researchers about Angerhausen will follow this question in the study published on Monday in the specialized magazine “The Astronomical Journal”. The “not finding anything” can therefore be an important result. Because some dozens of planets without indications can be sufficient to make statistically significant explanations about alien life.

In concrete terms, according to the study, this means: if the scientists do not find the least indication of life at 40 to 80 planets, one can certainly assume that no more than ten to 20 percent of the planets could accommodate foreign life.

“We should also be able to live with that”
Until now it was not even possible to say how likely it is that there is still foreign life, except us. Angerhausen himself is convinced to find something. “But it is also possible that we are all alone. We must also be able to live with it,” said the Swiss researcher at the Keystone-SDA press office. By the way, one of the planned telescopes will bear the name “Life”.
