With Robert Francis Prevost, a Cardinal from the US has become a pope for the first time (see video above). The 69-year-old has so far led the global Augustine Order and the Vatican Office for Bishops.
In this position he was responsible for naming bishops worldwide in the past two years. Prevost was born on September 14, 1955 in Chicago, as the son of Lous Marius Prevost and Mildred Martinez, with Spanish and French-Italian roots. He attended the small seminar of the Augustiner until 1973, then studied mathematics at Villanova University and joined the Augustinian order after their graduation in 1977.
In 1981 he took the eternal profession, then he studied theology at the Cathological Union in Chicago and was arranged in Rome in 1982. At the Pontifical University of Saint Saint Thomas Aquin in Rome, he acquired the Licensor (1984) and The Doctorate (1987) in Canon Law.
Remains in Peru and Rome
His order then sent him to Peru as a missionary, whose citizenship he has had next to the US since 2015. There he initially worked as Chancellor of the Chulucanas Territorial Pre-Presiding in 1985-1986 and, after a brief interim stay in the US from 1988 to 1998, he led the Augustinian seminar in Trillo. In addition to the training of young religious men, he was a teacher for Canon Law, Court Vicar, a member of the Consulting College of the Archdiocese of Trujillo and community assistant.
These are the predecessors of Leo XIV:
In 1998, Prevost was elected provincial of the Augustiner in Chicago before he was elected to the general priority of the command based in Rome in 2001. He held this position until 2013. After that he worked again in the United States, including as a training manager and provincial vicar in Chicago.
He received the consecration on December 12, 2014, a year later he became a permanent bishop of Chicago. In 2020, Prevost was appointed as the municipality for the bishops, three years later he was raised as a cardinal. This year the promotion to Albano’s Cardinal Bisschop followed.
Speaks six languages
In South America, Pope met Franciscus Pope Francis, who brought him to the Roman Curia. In Austria the Cardinal was last November and in Vienna he celebrated the festival service for the 675th Waandingsdag of the Augustinian Church. In addition to his native English, Prevost also speaks Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese. He also has basic knowledge in German.
He must continue his predecessor to let the believers participate more. Just like Francis, Leo XIV is considered modest.
