In the midst of Britain’s massive government crisis, Britain’s Secretary of State for Education, Andrea Jenkyns, caused a scandal on Thursday. As she walked past a demo of “Bye Boris”, she held out the middle finger to the audience – for which she also received criticism from her own Conservative Party. The behavior was “outrageous,” Tory MP George Freeman tweeted on Saturday. “This is exactly why we need a new prime minister.”
The code of conduct for ministers must be restored, service in public offices must be respected. Cabinet Member Mark Spencer said the obscene gesture was unacceptable.
Offended by “barking crowd”.
Jenkyns justified himself. Like other politicians, she was heavily insulted by a “barking mob”. In recent years, she has received verbal abuse and four death threats. “I was at the end of my strength.” Jenkyns stressed that no one should endure such treatment. “I should have shown more composure, but I’m only human.”
The politician says she made the obscene gesture on Thursday as she entered Downing Street through a gate. While there, she followed Johnson’s announcement of his retirement and showed her support for the 58-year-old. She has since been appointed State Secretary for Education by the incumbent Prime Minister. Dozens of people lined the gates, many of whom chanted, calling on the prime minister to resign immediately.
Polite manners “expected too much”?
“Nobody expects Secretaries of State to be perfect,” tweeted Labor Party opposition politician Bridget Phillipson. “But is it too much to expect them not to treat the public that way?” Dealing with criticism of him and his government and his disrespect for ethics and morals also led to Prime Minister Johnson’s downfall.
