Graz and the surrounding area have been growing strong for decades and the Koralbahn will further increase this trend, even according to the predictions. The city region is easier to reach, internationally more attractive – and has to prepare for many more people.
The local transport junctions Graz-Don Bosco and Puntigam, the tram underneath list on the main train station, the expansion of the BIM line 5: “You often do not even know that this was all implemented because of the Koralbahn,” Klaus Schneider recalls. As project manager of the ÖBB, he has been accompanied the Mega -Spoorweg project for 28 years. The fast route to Klagenfurt will work in 200 days and will also change the Graz area.
20 percent increase in the first year
This was discussed during the “city dialogue” in the architecture house. “Like a large frequency bearing, the railway will bring many people to Graz,” emphasizes the city beam director Bertram Werle. When the first part between Weitendorf and Wetmannstätten was completed in 2010, the passenger number of the S-Bahn increased by 20 percent in the first year! Similar dimensions are again possible according to Schneider.
More commuters, more tourists
More commuters are expected, especially from West Styria. But the mobility behavior of students must also change. And there are completely new opportunities for tourism. “Until now, an application in Carinthia has not been a big problem,” says Susanne Haubenhofer, director of the Graz Adventure Region. “Now the market is becoming much more interesting for us.”
International accessibility improves, Graz is connected to European networks. An example: night trains to Venice or Rome stops in the capital of the capital of mid -December.
More and more growth: “Overload phenomena”
Graz is currently growing around 4,000 main homes per year. This trend will not delay. “However, there are already symptoms of overload,” says Kerstin Weber of Regional Management. The pressure on the source floor increases. It is sustainable planning for the city region (meant Graz with his surrounding communities), “so that we do not collapse”.
Just as important: public transport in Graz must be expanded. Vice mayor Judith Schwentner (Greens) mainly mentions plans for Tram Line 8, which should connect Gösting to Webling. Financing discussions have started with federal and national governments. Other local transport junctions are also planned.
“Central Station is on the limit”
Werle, director of the city construction, also admits: “The main train station is already on the limit.” It is therefore important to set the course for the future. There have been visions of a large S-Bahn tunnel for a long time. It is just a vision – but the Koralmahn was nothing anymore.
