Stands for Uffizien – Florence: Cult Crane is removed after 20 years

Date:

The crane has been on the forecourt of the Uffizi in Florence for two decades. It is now almost an integral part of the cityscape. Ufficia director Simone Verde has now announced that the tap will be removed next week.

There were always civil complaints against the tap. Many residents believe that he is blocking the view of one of the most attractive and most famous areas of Florence.

A possible removal of the crane has long been mentioned, but now the museum management has announced an exact date. The work starts next Monday and should last six days. The mayor of Florence, Sara Funaro, described this as a “historical event”: on this occasion a celebration is organized on the terrace of the museum, and Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli will also be present.

Light lift instead of cult crane
The crane is 60 meters high and visible at a kilometer distance. It was installed in 2006 for modernization and expansion work on the Uffizien Gallery. The work had already started in 1995, but has since been hindered by delays and bureaucratic problems, so that they have not yet been completed.

The crane always caused differences between the former mayor Dario Nardella and the former director of the Uffizi, Eike Schmidt. The Schmidt, from Freiburg, was on the way to the mayor in Florence last year, but lost to the Social -Democrat Funaro. Schmidt is now director of the Museum Capodimonte in Naples.

The tap is now being replaced by a much less striking cargo lift. Instead, a considerably slimmer construction site has been set up to complete the work, as announced by the city council. The financing of the new -build location is 180,000 euros that has been made available by a group of local entrepreneurs, associations and foundations.
