Syrian leadership under President Ahmed al-Sharaa is still one kilometers away from the purpose of reconciliation between individual ethnic groups and permanent stability. At least 89 people died in recent unrest in the south of the country. The armed collisions also mentioned Israel’s army on stage that various Syrian tanks attacked.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, 50 members of the Drusian minority, 18 Bedouins and 14 government soldiers are among the dead. Dozens of people were also injured, some of them were life threatening. The Syrian Ministry of the Interior initially reported more than 30 fatalities and around 100 injuries in different communities.
Fight after attack on Drianian youth
According to the Observation Center, which follows the conflict in Syria from London with the help of a network of activists on site, the unrest started a few days ago by theft on a Drusian teenager on the highway between Damascus and Suwaida. Relatives of local trunks therefore built a checkpoint where they reportedly stopped the young man, brutally defeated and robbed. Then Drusian had abducted Fighter Bedouins, which ultimately led to violence in the area.
The Ministry of Defense sent military units to put an end to violence. The troops had fought on the side of the Bedouins, the observation site said. There were mortar fire and drone attacks. The purpose of the military operation is to “protect citizens after 48 hours of bloodshed,” the ministry said. They work together with the Druze leaders and the Governor of Suwaida to calm the situation.
Israel attacked Syrian tanks.
The fighting also fed the conflict with neighboring Israel. The army of Israel claimed various tanks in the region. The combat vehicles had moved to the city of Suwaida, the attack should prevent this, the Israeli army said later. The presence of such weapon systems in southern Syria can “pose a threat to the state of Israel,” it said.
It was initially unclear whether the attack of Israel was directly related to the outbreak of new violence in the area. Israel attacks more destinations in the neighboring country and was already intervened after the fatal violence between Sunni militias and Drusian hunters at the end of April – according to their own explanations to support the Druses in Syria. The members of this religious minority live alongside Syria, especially in Israel, Jordan and Lebanon. In Israel, many Druses voluntarily serve in the army – the Jewish state sees it as an ally.
