According to British intelligence, the Russian army could interrupt operations in Ukraine in the coming weeks. “I think they are about to run out of breath,” British intelligence chief Richard Moore said. So far, about 15,000 Russian soldiers are said to have died in the war. It is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain personnel and equipment.
“They (Russian forces) will have to pause in a way, and that gives the Ukrainians a chance to hit back,” M16 chief Richard Moore said at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado. Kiev hopes to launch a counter-attack, mainly with Western weapons, and recapture the territories occupied by Russia.
According to Moore, Ukraine now has to show that the war can be won – including now that concerns about energy shortages in Europe increase in the winter.
“I think it is important that the Ukrainians themselves show that they can counterattack. And I think that will be very important for their continued high morale,” Moore said. It is also important for the rest of Europe to see Ukraine can win. More than 15,000 Russian soldiers have been killed by conservative estimates so far.
The Kremlin classifies the dead as a state secret, even in times of peace. According to Kiev, about 100 to 200 soldiers are killed every day on the Ukrainian side. This means that the average number of deaths in general is higher than that of Russia.
“Poor is Putin’s cannon fodder”
According to Moore, it will become increasingly difficult for the Russian army to obtain personnel and equipment in the coming weeks. Until now, Russian President Vladimir Putin relied mainly on “poor people from rural areas”.
“They come from working-class towns in Siberia and are disproportionately ethnic minorities. And they are his cannon fodder,” Moore said. Putin, who is probably not seriously ill, is not falling back on the bourgeoisie in St Petersburg or Moscow.
The war in Ukraine has lasted for about five months. The British Secret Service regularly publishes information about current events, which the Ministry of Defense has access to. Britain supplies weapons and trains Ukrainian soldiers on how to use them.
