Losses looming – London bushfires wrap airport in smoke

Date:

The ongoing heat wave and the accompanying drought are also causing problems on the other side of the Channel. Several bushfires and wildfires have been raging in the London area since Sunday afternoon, which have now come dangerously close to the British capital. Heathrow Airport was shrouded in gray smoke, winds have so far made it possible to take off and land with slight delays. But if the smoke gets worse, there is a risk of flight cancellations.

The fire broke out in the county of Surrey, southwest of London, and local fire brigades were deployed extensively. The smoke not only drifted towards West London, Heathrow Airport was also hit. The Surrey Fire and Rescue Service urged residents to keep windows and doors closed and avoid the area where the fires were raging.

Flight operations continue
A spokesman for Heathrow Airport told the Daily Mail on Sunday afternoon that the flight can currently be continued with slight delays. However, it is impossible to say how the situation will develop further.

Skyfall location on fire
Also affected by the fires is the 560-acre Hankley Common Nature Reserve in south-west Surrey. The nature reserve became known as a film set for the James Bond movie “Skyfall” and for the Marvel blockbuster “Black Widow” starring Scarlett Johansson.

The plumes of smoke could be seen from miles away. The area is owned by the Ministry of Defense and also serves as a military training ground. Military buildings on the site had already been evacuated.
