Western sanctions hit Russian oligarchs hard: many luxury yachts have already been seized or have had to flee such measures. For the billionaire Abramovich, it is the second time that he changes berths, because he is, of course, afraid of reprisals.
Yacht was in harbor by British operator
Before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the “Solaris” had been in the port of Barcelona. After a stopover in Montenegro, it docked in Turkey – the country has not imposed any sanctions on Russia or its wealthy citizens. But even the berth in Bodrum should not have been a safe haven for the billionaire, the yacht was once again moved.
The reason for this could be that the marina is owned by British company Global Port Holdings – Britain has imposed sanctions on oligarchs including Abramovich, Rosneft boss and Putin confidant Igor Sechin and Gazprom boss Alexei Miller.
The British port operator had stated that the yacht was outside Great Britain and therefore had neither the right to seize the ship nor to throw it out of port. Moreover, one would not collect mooring fees at the “Solaris”. According to Marine Traffic, which manages the ships’ position data, the superyacht is currently at anchor in a bay not far from Bodrum.
