A raging forest fire in southern Brandenburg has caused a lot of commotion in recent days. Several firefighters were injured in the extinguishing work. The fire had spread to an area of about 800 hectares in a very short time since Monday. Now it’s time to breathe a sigh of relief: the situation has eased somewhat overnight. In the other forest fire areas in Germany, however, the end is not yet in sight.
The authorities in Brandenburg were yet to make an official statement, but the situation eased overnight. The fire had flared up again on Wednesday evening. Currently, a number of embers are observed with temperatures between 40 and 180 degrees. At the moment, about 320 emergency services from different parts of Brandenburg are still working on the extinguishing work.
To further contain the fire, a recovery tank from the Bundeswehr arrived at night. Transport helicopters also helped with loads of water from Kiebitzsee.
The general situation remains tense
The situation remains tense in the other forest fire areas in Germany. Hundreds of emergency services have been fighting the flames for days. Eight fire fighting helicopters are now deployed in the national park area of Saxon Switzerland. Turning winds from the direction of the Czech Republic had recently exacerbated the situation. The firefighting is currently aimed at preventing the further spread of flames from the neighboring country. “Emergency services are doing their utmost to further contain the fire,” the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district office said on Thursday.
Largest wildfire in the country’s history
The development of the fire is dynamic. The fire had broken out the weekend before in the Bohemian Switzerland National Park in the Czech Republic and spread to the Saxon Switzerland National Park. According to the fire service, 1,000 hectares have already burned down on the Czech side. It is one of the largest wildfires the country has ever seen. About 500 firefighters are working to put out the fire.
A disaster alert has been in effect in Bad Schandau in Saxon Switzerland since Tuesday. Tourists should avoid the area. In the Saxon Switzerland-Osterzgebirge district, it is forbidden to enter the forests until further notice. The state capital of Dresden also restricted its rules for access to forests.
