During her life she loved glitz and glamor and liked to be in the higher circles. But the final resting place of Ivana Trump, who died two weeks ago at age 73 in a fall at her home on Manhattan’s posh Upper East Side, is unusually simple. The place where Donald Trump’s ex-wife is buried is especially surprising: on a golf course in the American state of New Jersey.
Trump’s National Golf Club in Bedminster has been owned by the Trump Organization since 2002. Since it was officially classified as farmland, the Trump family has been able to secure a significant tax break. In addition to golf, weddings and other events can be held at luxury prices. Trump’s daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner also tied the knot there in 2009. During the presidency, Trump repeatedly used the property as a retreat and for consultations away from the mainstream media audience. The club also became Trump’s “summer white house,” where the former president often spent weekends.
Trump plans family cemetery on golf course
For a few days, a marble slab has been carved into the ground at the first hole with Ivana Trump’s name on it. A few white flowers adorn the fresh grave, which – surrounded by trees and shrubs – is quite isolated from the rest of the golf course. According to American media, the 76-year-old entrepreneur would also like to be buried there. There are plans to build a family cemetery there.
But could these plans also involve tax breaks? American sociologist Brooke Harrington, who describes herself as a “tax researcher,” has explained in several tweets that areas in New Jersey used as cemeteries, among other things, are not subject to property taxes. Also, according to the law, from which Harrington also quotes, there is no lower limit for the number of graves. Controversy has now erupted on social media. A user points out in this regard that for such exceptions the entire building should be used as a cemetery.
Trump’s three children from his first marriage
Born in what is now the Czech Republic, Ivana Marie Zelnícková had worked as an athlete, businesswoman and model, among other things. In New York she met Donald Trump, whom she married in 1977. She is best known as the first wife of future US President Donald Trump. The former model and then real estate mogul broke through into New York high society in the 1980s before gaining much publicity in the 1990s and Trump married his second wife, Marla Maples. Trump’s children Ivanka, Donald Junior and Eric are from the first marriage.
