The fire exchange between Israel and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) has marked its second day with constant attacks in both directions, with no signs of a ceasefire and a continuous increase in the number of victimswhich amounts to 15 dead – all Palestinians – and about 150 injured.

What started yesterday as an Israeli “preemptive offensive” through airstrikes on the Gaza Strip has turned into the most serious spike in violence in the area since the escalation of violence in 2021.

Since early this morning and throughout the day, anti-aircraft alarms in the Israeli communities bordering Gaza have not stopped due to the incessant firing of missiles by the Jihad.

Since firing its first projectiles yesterday in response to the Israeli attack, the Islamist group is estimated to have launched more than 350 missiles, the vast majority of which hit open areas or were intercepted by Israel’s Dome anti-aircraft iron defense system.

The Israeli military, for its part, continues to bomb the entire length and breadth of the Strip, including a major attack that destroyed a five-story residential building.

Targets hit also include facilities allegedly used by the YIP for weapons production and storage, military checkpoints and sites from which missiles were launched, attacked by drones, helicopters and combat aircraft.

The number of Palestinian casualties has grown over time and includes today’s death of a 62-year-old woman, which is another yesterday’s death of a five-year-old girl.
