Apple is expected to give a boost to artificial intelligence at its WWDC developers conference on Monday. According to media reports, technology from ChatGPT inventor OpenAI will also be used in addition to the in-house developed functions. Innovations could include the ability to have new emojis created by AI when typing text, the financial service Bloomberg wrote.
“It’s going to be a big deal,” CEO Tim Cook said Sunday about the WWDC plans during a meeting with young programmers. At the internal WWDC conference at the company’s headquarters in Cupertino, California, the American iPhone group traditionally gives a look at software and features that will be introduced to new generations of devices from the fall. This time it is certain that artificial intelligence (AI) will play a central role.
Summarize emails, formulate responses in advance
According to Bloomberg, there will be an AI function that can summarize the contents of missed messages or emails. This is useful, for example, if you have not looked at your smartphone for a while. The iPhone should also be able to pre-formulate answers for users, as was said, citing informed people.
Apple’s voice assistant Siri, which now seems quite simple compared to chatbots like ChatGPT, will also take on more tasks than before thanks to AI, Bloomberg wrote. For example, you can delete emails and edit photos with voice commands.
Google and Microsoft rushed to the fore
In recent weeks, Google and Microsoft have also placed particular emphasis on focusing on AI features at their developer conferences. Microsoft has already secured expanded access to OpenAI technology through a multibillion-dollar pact. Google sometimes supplements search results in the US with AI summaries, but in the beginning the software made some mistakes, such as recommending eating a small stone a day. Apple has largely limited the use of AI in its devices to individual functions such as improving photos and videos.
An important question will be from which iPhone generation the individual AI functions will be usable. According to Bloomberg, many of these will require one of this year’s models, or at least a 2023 iPhone 15 Pro. If the AI innovations prove popular, it could lead to accelerated customer upgrades to new devices. The iPhone is by far Apple’s most important product. It generates more than half of the revenue – and also drives the business with apps and subscriptions.
